Zufall oder Verbeugung vor der Vinyl-Schallplatte? Disease von Grande Roses ist genau 33:33 Minuten lang. So viele Umdrehungen macht eine Vinyl-LP in der Minute – und wenn 33:33 Minuten manchen als eine recht knappe Spiellänge für ein Album erscheinen mag, so zeigt es doch auch, wohin die Reise mit Grande Roses geht: auf den Punkt und gerade aus.

Die Band aus der schwedischen Provinz, aus Östersund 500 Kilometer nördlich von Stockholm genau genommen, spielt straighte Rockmusik ohne sich einem klarem Genre oder gar Image zu verschreiben. Vielen fallen da vielleicht zuerst Bands wie Mando Diao als Vergleich ein, aber Grande Roses stehen mehr in der Tradition von Gruppen wie Union Carbide Productions (den Vorläufern von Soundtrack Of Our Lives) oder Leather Nun, etwas rotziger und druckvoller als ihre aktuell erfolgreichen Landsmänner.

Disease ist das erste Album von Grande Roses, doch die Band besteht in verschiedenen Inkarnationen schon seit zehn Jahren. In der Band-Bio ist von mehreren EPs die Rede, doch präsent ist nur Hide von 2011, ein Mini-Album mit sechs Songs. Da war der Eindruck noch etwas gemäßigter. Gute Rock-Songs, aber nicht wirklich heavy.

Disease bringt es auf zehn Stücke, alle zwischen zwei und knapp vier Minuten lang. Das Titelstück macht den Anfang. Sänger Göran Messelt Andersson spukt den Text geradezu giftig aus, die Gitarristen spielen ein simples Riff über eine treibenden Rhythmus. Der aggressivere Ton überrascht nicht, denn die Band macht keinen Hehl daraus, dass die Trennung von dem Majorlabel EMI/Capitol alles andere als freundschaftlich war. Disease erscheint nun bei dem Berliner Label Noisolution. Insgesamt härter und druckvoller, aber auch mit etwas melodiöseren Songs. Neben den Vergleichen mit skandinavischen Bands erinnert die Band gelegentlich an die Sisters Of Mercy, allerdings von einer echten Band ohne Drum-Maschine gespielt.

Bei der kompakten Spielzeit ist das Album schnell durchgehört und die Höhepunkte schnell genannt: Radio Heartbreak ist die naheliegende Single, Waiting For The Night zieht das Tempo an und Yours hat schon fast hymnen-haften Character.

Insgesamt ist Grande Roses ein Album gelungen, mit dem sich die Band einerseits gut in die Riege der leicht Garage-angehauchten Rockbands Schwedens einreiht, andererseits aber durchaus ein eigenes Profil bewahrt hat.

Coincidence or nod to the classic vinyl-album? Grande Roses’ debut Disease runs for exactly 33 minutes and 33 seconds – just like the RPMs of a vinyl-LP. And if 33:33 minutes seems a bit short for a complete album, the tight running time shows what Grande Roses are about: quick and to the point.

Hailing from the Swedish backwater town of Oestersund (320 miles north of Stockholm), Grande Roses plays straightforward rock music – without subscribing to an obvious genre or image. Many will compare them to fellow Swedes Mando Diao but Grande Roses are more in the vein of bands like Union Carbide Productions (the later Soundtrack Of Our Lives) and Leather Nun, a little tougher and grittier than their currently more successful countrymen.

Disease is the first album by Grande Roses but the bands has been around for almost ten years – with numerous line-ups. The band bios mentions several EPs but there is only Hide to be found, a six-track-mini-album from 2011. On it, the sound was still a little subdued. Good rock-songs but not really heavy.
Disease includes ten songs, all between two and four minutes long. The title track comes first, Singer Göran Messelt Andersson spits out the lyrics with a lot of venom, the guitar players concentrate on a simple riff over a driving rhythm. The more aggressive tone comes as no surprise since the band makes no bones about the less than amicable split from the major label EMI/Capitol. Disease is released by the Berlin-based label Noisolution. Its harder and more powerful but still with some melodious moments. Besides comparisons to other Scandinavian bands Grande Roses sound like the Sisters Of Mercy at times, but played by a real band without a drum machine.

With the tight running time the album goes by rather quickly and the highlights are easy to point out: Radio Heartbreak is the obvious single, Waiting For The Night picks up speed while Yours is almost hymn-like.
Grande Roses has produced an album that shows the band on the one hand as one of the many garage-influended rockbands in Sweden. On the other hand the musicians managed to keep their own profile.
