DxBxSx machen 2014 eine Live-Pause, versüßen uns aber mit einer Cover-EP die Warterei. Auf der Rotormania 2013 war ich fasziniert von den einprägsamen Lyrics und der rohen Energie des offensichtlich neuen Stücks Isses nich geil. Natürlich nur um hinterher herauszufinden, dass es sich um ein eingedeutschtes Coverstück von Rocket From The Tombs (bzw. später Dead Boys, The) handelt. Nach dem Schließen dieser peinlichen Lücke (jetzt Fan beider Inkarnationen), war klar, dass die angekündigte Cover-EP keine gute, sondern eine großartige Idee ist.
Wo bei anderen Bands schon eine Cover allein eher verzweifelter Stimmungsmache und Einfallslosigkeit entsprechen kann, drehen Drei Bier Später richtig auf und überraschen mit der weiteren Auswahl der Künstler: John Lennon, Beastie Boys, sowie deutsche Helden Freygang und Rio Reiser. Wobei DxBxSx bzw. Angels Stimme eine Ähnlichkeit zu letzterem ja schon lange nachgesagt wird und auch nicht zu verleugnen ist.
Hier wird nicht nur nicht abgeschrieben. Teilweise wird sogar der Spickzettel zuhause gelassen. Das Riff vom Titelstück hat man noch relativ schnell dem Klassiker Sabotage zugeordnet, bei Die Nadel (Cold Turkey, John Lennon) kann man aber schon eine Weile rätseln. Tribut gezollt, anders gewesen und mal wieder einfach ein paar geile rotzige Songs geschrieben. Die Scheibe läuft schon seit Anfang Juli immer wieder und schafft es wie zu erwarten nicht langweilig zu werden.
Was gibt es noch zu sagen? Fans der Band werden die Platte sowieso schon im Schrank stehen haben, allen anderen würde ich als Einstieg zwar eher Zugriff (2011) empfehlen, aber Kriegserklärung sollte keineswegs als Beiprodukt der Zeit verstanden werden. Vergisst man die Namen der Vorbilder klingt das hier sowieso nach typischen, von uns geliebten DxBxSx-Songs. Hoffentlich schafft es 2015 neben Isses nich geil noch ein weiterer Song auf die Setlist.
Für Freunde von: Blutige Knie, Ton Steine Scherben, Attitüde
Dass Lavalampen eine hypnotische Anziehung auf ihre Beobachter ausüben, ist bekanntlich nichts Neues. Die Band Go Bananas aus Hallein in Salzburg hat diese Gravitation wiederum in Musik umgewandelt und im neuen Album Erutan manifestiert. Als Geheimtipp tummelt sich das Quintett schon einige Jahre im mehr oder minder überschaubaren österreichischen Stonerrock-Aquarium und genießt seinen guten Ruf sowohl als Performance-Act als auch als Gastgeber diverser Jam-Sessions und Psychedelic-Partys. Für Inspiration und musikalische Errungenschaften dienten also genug Möglichkeiten, um diese in Erutan einfließen zu lassen. Das Programm der Bananen-Passionierten war immer schon kontrastreich und die stilistischen Einflüsse galten als beinah-abstruses Mauerwerk aus Black Sabbath, Baby Woodrose und AC/DC. Erutan ist verträumt, trancig und verspielt – bevor man aber glaubt, das Ganze als herzlich-putzigen Psychedelic abzustempeln, sollte man jedoch noch etwas tiefer graben. Hinter (fast) jeder Lieblichkeit steckt ein wildes Biest mit Mistgabel und blutunterlaufenen Augen. Harte Riffs, rauhe Vocals und Cowbells sorgen für die Gewitterentladung nach einem sonnig-spacigen Spaziergang im blumigen Schlaraffenland. Voreilige Schlüsse zu ziehen ist bei diesem Album also waghalsig und gefährlich, ansonsten verliert man sich noch im eigenen Dämmerzustand ehe der gitarrenlastige Klamauk für diese Unachtsamkeit auf Rache sinnt. Go Bananas haben hier einfach alles richtig gemacht und zeigen, dass Kreativität und Humor nach wie vor am besten zünden.
Für Freunde von: Kyuss, Colour Haze, Baby Woodrose
Die mannigfachen Stile des Justin K. Broadrick versiegen nie. Mit Godflesh legte er vor 26 Jahren den Grundstein des Industrial Metal und erzeugte sogar innerhalb dieses sperrigen und unnahbaren Stils solch unbändige Ausdruckskraft, sodass scharenweise Bands in den Jahren darauf sein Werk als Inspiration nennen sollen.
Bevor nach 13 Jahren endlich ein neues Studioalbum das Licht der Welt erblicken wird, hat die sehnsüchtige Warterei mit der 4-Track-EP Decline & Fall ein vorzeitiges Ende gefunden.
Als Godflesh-Neuankömmling kann man sich das musikalische Archiv der Band zu Gemüte führen, muss man aber nicht, denn Diversität war schon immer der größte Anreiz für Broadrick seine ungezähmte Kreativität auszudrücken. Ringer klingt frustriert und hart, somit hat die Band ihre Vergangenheit scheinbar nicht vergessen. Maschinelle und unterkühlte Industrial-Riffs und schwere, sludgige Drumfills greifen wieder auf die Metal-Anfänge des 1994er-Albums Selfless zurück, Decline & Fall erzeugt jedoch durch illbiente Einflüsse vor allem Nervenkitzel, der zuletzt vor allem aufgrund der teils apathischen, teils aggressiven Gesangparts geisterhaft und verstörend wirkt. Decline & Fall ist für Freunde der Band ein Muss, für jene, die den kalten Herbst bereits herbeisehnen ein interessantes Wagnis, aber für Hillbillys und Sonnenanbeter eine musikgewordene Horrorerscheinung.
Ja, die Riffs sind wieder mal dick. Und ja, man kann laut aufdrehen und dazu abnicken. Wäre Arch Stanton jedoch nur eines von den vielen aus dem Boden schießenden Stoner-Riff-Alben, würde es neben innovativen Genre-Highlights schnell untergehen. Auch das Fehlen von Rob Oswald und Rick Mullins lässt das Interesse etwas sinken.
Nichtsdestotrotz lohnt es sich bei 53 oder 57 die Volume auf Maximum zu drehen, denn die strotzen geradeso vor Riff-Gewalt. Für alles andere warte ich auf “100” und hoffe auf einen markanten Stil- anstatt wiederholtem Riff-Wechsel. Wild, Wonderful… Purgatory und Almost Heathen werden auch weiterhin als Klassiker in meiner Plattensammlung stehen, und obwohl der Instrumental-Rock im sechsten Anlauf etwas an Reiz verliert, werden Fans sicher auch mit Arch Stanton glücklich.
Lucifer Baby – The Walls / The Spell (Single) (2014)
Cachimbo de Paz sind tot, lang Lebe Lucifer Baby! Die Linzer Cachimbos, bekannt durch die Use The Fuzz Split mit Parasol Caravan wagen unter neuem Namen und mit neuem Drummer einen Neuanfang. Als Vorbote fürs neue Album kommt daher diese 2-Track-Single. Wie schon in der Vorgänger-Band werden die Fuzz-Pedale ordentlich aufgedreht, mal gehts psychedelisch zu, mal wird gegroovt was das Zeug hält. Immer nahe am Mid-Tempo Bereich gehalten, schlängeln sich beide Songs durch eine etwas melancholische Grundstimmung. Zwar halte ich das alles für noch nicht sehr aussagekräftig, bin aber auf das Album mehr als gespannt!
Das zweite Album der Detroiter Band um den Small Stone Records Chef Scott Williams lebt vom atmosphärischen Gesang von Bassistin Sue Lott, der sich wie ein psychedelischer Vorhang über das doomige Heavy-Rock Fundament legt. Drogenschwangere Songs lassen einen beim hören in andere Welten abdriften, einzig das Bowie-Cover “I’m afraid of americans” wirkt etwas deplaziert. Ansonsten ein schönes Album zum träumen und die Alltagssorgen zu vergessen und eine gute Mischung aus Psych, Prog, Doom und sogar einigen Pop-Anleihen.
Für Freunde von: Monkey3, weiblichen Vocals, Acid King on LSD
„Mein Herz soll ein Motor sein? Doch was treibt er an?“ Es lässt sich zumindest beantworten, wovon es angetrieben wird: nämlich von diesem schlauen Paket aus Progressive, funkigem Psychedelic, Rhythmikspielchen und entrücktem Gesang an, welches diese junge Gruppe aus Potsdam auf ihrem Debüt Germinal zum Besten gibt. Offensichtlich konnte das gitarreuse Gefrickel von The Mars Volta die Jungs nicht demotivieren, selbst Erschaffer experimenteller Musik zu werden. Doch anders wie ihre teils schwer zugänglichen Vorbilder, gönnen sich Minerva poppige Momente und Zeit zum Aus- und Einatmen. Alles wunderbar, einfallsreich und schön bis auf den Sprechgesang – den muss man mögen, so wie er z.B. auf Der Gläserne Käfig zu hören ist, kann man sich aber auch notfalls wegdenken. Aber vor allem lassen Minerva dem Rezipienten die Möglichkeit, ihre musikalischen Ausuferungen und Fantasien selbst zu interpretieren. Ein Bilderrätsel, das man nur zu gerne löst.
Für Freunde von: Coogans Bluff, The Mars Volta, Hypnos 69
Etwas für die Sammler: Die schwedische Band Mother Of God, die 2012 ihr Debütalbum Anthropos auf dem Detroiter Label Small Stone veröffentlichte, meldet sich nach einem Jahr relativer Inaktivität mit dieser auf 350 Stück limitierten Single zurück. Zwei Songs, „Black Ocean“ und „Dark Sun Above“, die nahtlos an dem Album anschließen. Die A-Seite ist etwas schneller, die B-Seite etwas schleppender. Beides grundsolide Songs, mit denen sich Mother Of God auf der skandinavischen Heavy-Rock-Landkarte zwischen Dozer, The Awesome Machine und Graveyard platzieren. Daniel Nygren (Gesang, Gitarre), Johan Kvastegard (Gitarre), Carl Lindblad (Bass) und Jimmy Hurtig (Schlagzeug) sind ganz offensichtlich mit Soundgarden und Alice In Chains groß geworden und haben sich dann in der Musikgeschichte zurückgearbeitet. Revolutionär ist das nicht, aber handwerklich einwandfrei.
Für Freunde von: Dozer, The Awesome Machine, Graveyard
Wem Prototyper im österreichischen Underground noch unbekannt sind, befindet sich wahrscheinlich im bereits 2-jährigen Winterschlaf. Da kommt ein Album genau recht um vor allem den Uneingeweihten etwas Feuer unterm Allerwertesten zu machen. Cities nennt sich das gute Stück des Wiener Quartetts, das einen erfrischenden Crossover aus schwerem Alternative Rock, (Stoner)-Metal und Grunge birgt und Prototyper unglaublich abwechslungsreich und mehrzwecktauglich macht.
Vor allem das erste Drittel bricht einem beinahe das Genick – thematisiert es schon mal das schwere Gewicht, das auf den eigenen Schultern lastet ehe harte Riffs und klirrende Becken den Wutausbruch repräsentieren. Rhythmische Wechsel und Kompromisslosigkeit ziehen sich konsequent durch das ganze Album, hin und wieder ertappt man sich als Hörer sogar dabei, gar nicht mehr zu wissen wie der Song begonnen hat, da man von seinem Ende einfach nur überrumpelt ist. Und wenn schließlich das stampfende Mammut tollwütig mit den Deftones tanzt (Mary Full of Grace), artig gegen den Strom geschwommen wird (Don’t believe in it), Stoner-Metal und Doom sich dem gegenseitigen Handkuss hingeben und rülpsend die Bierwampe hingehalten wird, spätestens da sollten auch die letzten Schlafmützen muntergerüttelt worden sein.
3 Jahre nach ihrem hervorragenden Debut Oceanus Porcellarum melden sich die 3 Berliner mit Onestone zurück. Sie gehen damit einen weiteren Schritt nach vorn und überzeugen mich wieder einmal vollkommen. Wie schon beim ersten Album strotzt ihr Zweitwerk vor Ideen und deren klasse Umsetzung. Monotonie scheint ihnen ein Fremdwort zu sein, egal wie lange gejammt wir, es bleibt immer spannend. Riffs, Trips und bezaubernde Melodien an allen Ecken. Eine wahnsinnig große Effektpalette lässt die Jungs Sounds weit ausserhalb normaler Sphären erzeugen. Eine Reise quer durch die Galaxie und wieder zurück, mit Höhen und Tiefen, Gänsehautmomenten, etwas Melancholie und einem Haufen Power! Schon im Opener Sphere wird so ziemlich alles aufgefahren (s. Hörprobe). Der Titelsong ist eine fette Hommage an Fu Manchu und auch erstmals mit Gesang. Die anderen 6 Songs sind alle für sich eine Offenbarung und bevor ich mich weiter in Worten des Lobes verliere…geht einfach los und holt euch die Platte! Verpasst auch nicht die Release-Shows, nachzulesen in unseren Tourdaten. Es lohnt sich, versprochen!
Für Freunde von: dem ersten Album, Mother Engine, Grandloom
Die Düsseldorfer Newcomer knallen uns eine 5-Song-EP vor den Latz, die sich gewaschen hat. Nachdem die Titel instrumental geplant und eingespielt waren, veredelte der eher zufällig dazugestoßene Sänger Pat alles mit seiner Stimme, die irgendwo zwischen Michael Poulsen und Phil Anselmo pendelt. Harte, metal-mäßige Parts mit aggresiven Shouts wechseln sich mit fuzzigem Groove ab. Immer vorwärts treibend, mit wahnsinnig geilem Gitarrensound. Von Sludge-Metal der NOLA Schule, über Doom-Anleihen bis zum guten alten Stoner…Alles überzeugt vollkommen! Könnte was ganz großes werden!
Für Freunde von: Down, Superjoint Ritual, Corrosion Of Conformity
“Könnte was ganz Großes werden” hab ich nach dem Hören ihrer ersten EP Grown against the grain geschrieben. Und ich liebe es wenn ich Recht habe! Denn das langersehnte Debüt der Düsseldorfer ist genau das fette Brett, auf das ich dieses Jahr gewartet habe! Diese tonnenschweren Riffs, dieser gottverdammt geile Groove und diese Stimme lassen mich fäusteschwingend in meiner Bude auf- und abspringen, den Volumeregler bereits bei “max” abgebrochen. Leck mich am Arsch geht das vorwärts! Wenn Pantera in der Wüste von Kyuss verprügelt würden, wäre das der Soundtrack dazu! Während Scary Operator schon zum Schlag ansetzt, haut einem spätestens No Surprise die Lichter aus (die Textzeile “right between the eyes” trifft‘s ziemlich genau). Und damit sind nur die ersten beiden Songs vorbei! Eines der Highlights ist das sich langsam aufbauende Thru the Eyes of God, das sich zum übelsten Nackenbrecher steigert! Das ruhige Perfect High ist das Planet Caravan von Slomind und bezaubert eher als zu beruhigen. Der Titelsong am Schluss fasst nochmal alles gebührend zusammen und begeistert mit etwas Downtempo, klasse Gesang von Pat, ner riesigen Schippe Groove und Riffs, Riffs, Riffs! Meine Empfehlung für alle, die ihren Stoner gern mit ner Prise Metal würzen und einfach abgehen wollen, anstatt dicht in der Ecke zu hocken! Hammerscheibe! Punkt! Aus!
In Österreich herrscht reges Musiktreiben. Bands treten in Erscheinung, formatieren sich neu oder tauchen wieder unter. Jakob Aigner, vormals als Frontmann des Linzer Trios Zyonara aktiv, blieb nach seinem Ausstieg nicht untätig und gründete ebenso eine Dreier-Kombo: Timestone. Da wo Zyonara lyrisch und musikalisch aneckte, schließt Timestone den Kreis. Meditative Wellenschläge, die von melancholischen Gitarren angeführt werden und rhetorische Fragen über humane Vergänglichkeit und Sinnhaftigkeit des Lebens bilden ein wahrhaftig schönes Konstrukt aus Psychedelic und feinfühligem Stoner Rock. Der Fisch ist jedoch noch am Zappeln und wird im rechten Moment mit Hilfe exzessiver Beckenschläge, Cowbells und basstönigem Tiefgangs ins Leben zurückgerufen. Timestone werden dank dieser Mannigfaltigkeit in naher Zukunft bestimmt noch viel Interesse auf sich ziehen.
Für Freunde von: Zyonara, My Sleeping Karma, Sungrazer
Die Wiener Torso liefern uns mit Inside ein 40-minütiges Feuerwerk an psychedelischem Stonerrock, der seine Wurzen in den 70ern hat. Eingängige, kraftvolle Melodien und eine ziemlich trippige Atmosphäre ziehen sich wie ein roter Faden durch das Album. Einige Querverweise zu aktuellen schwedischen Bands sind durchaus vorhanden, aber die Jungs bleiben trotzdem eigenständig. Hätten sie sich an manchen Stellen etwas mehr Zeit gelassen, wären bestimmt auch ausufernde Jams à la Iron Butterfly oder The Doors zustandegekommen. Die Spielfreude hätte es hergegeben, aber so bleibt das Album zumindest kurzweilig. Bei einem benebltem Live-Gig sind Torso sicherlich ein Hochgenuss!
Für Freunde von: Asteroid, Graveyard, 70’s Heavy Psych
Aus den Garagen in Münster kommt mit Wooly Antshake ein stoniges Punk’n’Roll Ungetüm auf uns zu. Schwer beeinflusst von der skandinavischen Power-Rock-Welle Mitte der 90er lassen sie’s ordentlich krachen und liefern 5 testosteron-schwangere Energiebündel ab. Immer mit einer herrlichen sleazigen “Leck mich am Arsch” Attitüde und dicken Eiern, wirbeln Haare, Drumsticks und Anschlaghände durch die Luft. Gute Laune und ordentlich Party sind dabei programmiert!
Für Freunde von: Gluecifer, Hellacopters, The Flaming Sideburns
Unsere Freunde von Noisolution sind für die Hand erlesenen Geheimtipps bei uns bekannt. Auch xBomb Factory ist hier keine Ausnahme. Die Engländer überzeugen mit ihrem wilden Debut “No”.
Hier klingt es dabei mal nach dissonanten Gods of Blitz, da nach einem irren Baby von Joy Divison und Murder City Devils. Meistens jedoch nach Gang of Four, Albini Projekten und definitiv immer nach treibendem Krach. Was selbstverständlich absolut positiv gemeint ist. Klar wird es auch mal anstrengend, aber nie frustrierend. Die Lyrics werden uns wütend entgegen geschrieen und nach zwei Durchläufen, wollen wir der Band diesen Gefallen erwidern. Drückend frischer Post-Punk für die, die nicht still sitzen können.
Für Freunde von: Gang of Four, Joy Division, Big Black
DxBxSx have a live break in 2014, but for being patience they give us a treat in form of a cover EP. At the Rotormania Festival 2013 I was fascinated with the memorable lyrics and the raw energy of the obviously new track Isses nich geil (Ain’t It Fun). Of course, only to find out afterwards, it is a cover track of Rocket From The Tombs (made known by the version of The Dead Boys) put into the German language. After closing this embarrassing gap in knowledge (now being a fan of both incarnations), it was obvious, the announced cover EP wasn’t a good idea, but a great one.
While other bands do covers just to please the crowd or out of unimaginativeness, DxBxSx crank it up and surprise with all their choices of artists: John Lennon, Beastie Boys, but also German heros Freygang and Rio Reisser. DxBxSx itself and mainly singer Angels voice has been compared to Rio Reisser in the past many time, fittingly.
They do not copy for the sake of copying, they sometimes even get rid of the blueprint almost completely. While the riff of the title track can be assigned to the classic Sabotage pretty quick, you really have to guess for the origin of Die Nadel (Cold Turkey, John Lennon). They pay tribute, while being different once again and just write some awesome kickass tunes. The record has been playing since July on and off, and has not get boring at all.
What else is there to say? Fans of the Band have this album standing in their collection anyway already. For newcomers I would recommend starting with their record Zugriff (2011), but Kriegserklärung should not be seen as a product of time only. If you forget the cover-band-names, these song sound like regular DxBxSx tracks for sure. Hopefully they are going to play some of these live 2015.

That lava lamps exert a hypnotic attraction to their observers is known as nothing new. The band Go Bananas from Hallein in Salzburg has converted this gravity into music and manifested it in the new album Erutan. As insider’s tip the quintet already splashes several years in a more or less manageable Austrian Stoner Rock aquarium, enjoying its reputation as a performance act as well as host of various jam sessions and Psychedelic parties. Therefore, inspiration and musical achievements were enough to slip into Erutan’s making process. The banana-passionate’s program always been high- contrast and their stylistic influences were regarded as an almost-abstruse masonry from Black Sabbath to Baby Woodrose and AC/DC. Erutan is dreamy, trance and playful – but before you think to characterize the whole thing as warm-twee Psychedelic you should dig a little deeper. Behind (almost) every loveliness lies a wild beast with pitchfork and bloodshot eyes. Heavy riffs, harsh vocals and cowbells provide the thunderstorm discharge after a sunny-spacey walk in the flowery paradise. Jumping to conclusions in this album is too reckless and dangerous, otherwise you lose yourself in your own semiconscious state before the guitar-driven slapstick is out for revenge due to this carelessness. Go Bananas have simply done everything right here and show that creativity and humor usually spark best.
The manifold styles of Justin K. Broadrick never fail. 26 years before he and Godflesh laid the foundation stone of Industrial Metal and even within this bulky and unapproachable genre they generated such an unbridled expressiveness that droves and inspired many bands over the years.
After 13 years a new studio album will finally see the light of the day, but before that the wishful waiting found a premature end with the four-track EP Decline & Fall.
As a Godflesh-newcomer you may take the band’s musical archive to heart but you don’t have to – diversity has always been the biggest incentive for Broadrick to untamed express his creativity. Ringer sounds frustrated and hard, so the band has not forgotten her past apparently. Mechanical and supercooled industrial riffs and heavy, sludgy drum fills grab back onto the Metal beginnings of the 1994 album Selfless but illbient influenced Decline & Fall especially produces thrill – not least due to consciously apathetic and aggressive vocals that seem ghostly and disturbing. Decline & Fall is a must for friends of the band, an interesting venture for those who already yearn for the cold autumn but for hillbillies and sunbathers it becomes a music-incarnate horror phenomenon.
Yes, the Riffs are big again. And yes, you can crank it up and start banging right away. But if Arch Stanton would happen to be just one of many popping up Stoner-Riff-records, it propably would drown next to innovative genre highlights. Also Rob Oswald and Rick Mullins are missing for me, since they brought a lot of character into this band.
Nevertheless it’s worth turning up the volume on songs like 53 oder 57, because they brim over with riff force. For everything else I’ll wait for “100” and hope it to be a change in style instead of a repeated riff change. Wild, Wonderful… Purgatory and Almost Heathen will be kept holy in my record collection and although the instrumental rock looses some of it’s excitment, I’m sure Fans will be happy with Arch Stanton.
Lucifer Baby – The Walls / The Spell (Single) (2014)
Cachimbo De Paz are dead, long live Lucifer Baby! The Linz-based Cachimbos, being known for the Use The Fuzz-Split with Parasol Caravan, try a new beginning under a new name and with a new drummer. The two track single comes as a forerunner for the new album. As to be seen in the previous band already, the fuzz pedals get cranked up, sometimes psychedelic, sometimes they groove like there’s no tomorrow. Always near the mid-tempo area both songs weave through the slightly melancholic undertone. Admittedly I find this stuff not too meaningful yet, but I am really looking foreward to the album release!
The second full length album by Detroits Luder lives from a doomy Heavy-Rock basement with Small Stone Records boss Scoot Williams on the guitar and the atmospheric vocals from Sue Lott (also bass). The trippy song let you space out into other worlds, just the Bowie-cover “I’m afraid of americans” won’t fit in. But it’s a great album for day dreaming and to leave daily routine out. A nice mixture of psych, prog, doom and sometimes pop.
For friends of: Monkey3, female vocals, Acid King on LSD
„Mein Herz soll ein Motor sein? Doch was treibt er an?“ At least it can be answered by what it is driven: by this clever package of Progressive, funky Psychedelic, little rhythm-plays and abstracted voice, offered by this young group of Potsdam on their debut Germinal. Obviously the guitar-heavy madness by The Mars Volta could not demotivate them to be creators of experimental music too. But unlike their partial inaccessible role models, Minerva allow themselves Pop moments and time for breathing in and enjoy. Everything’s wonderful, imaginative and beautiful but to the chant – this you have to like or not, as for example can be heard on Der Gläserne Käfig, but one can also think it away if necessary. Something for the collectors: The Swedish band Mother Of God, that released their debut album Anthropos on the Detroit label Small Stone in 2012, returns with this seven-inch, limited to 350 copies. Two songs, Black Ocean and Dark Sun Above, that continue in the vein of the album. The a-side is a little faster, the flip-side features a more slow-burning pace. Solid stuff that places Mother Of God on the Scandinavian heavy-rock-map somewhere between Dozer, The Awesome Machine and Graveyard. Daniel Nygren (vocals, guitars), Johan Kvastegard (guitars), Carl Lindblad (bass) and Jimmy Hurtig (drums) obviously grew up with Soundgarden and Alice In Chains and then worked their way back in music history. That is not really revolutionary but expertly executed.
For friends of: Dozer, The Awesome Machine, Graveyard
When Prototyper are still unknown to you you’re probably in a 2-year hibernation. So their album seems to be perfectly on time, especially to light a little fire under the uninitiated’s behind. The good piece by Viennese quartet is called Cities that brings a refreshing crossover from heavy alternative rock, (stoner) – metal and grunge and makes Prototyper incredibly varied and much suitable.
Especially the first third nearly breaks your neck – thematizing the heavy weight that overloads your own shoulders before heavy riffs and biting cymbals represent the outburst. Rhythmic changes and intransigence pull through the whole album consistently, now and then you catch yourself not even knowing how the song started since you’re simply overwhelmed by its end. And when finally a stomping mammoth rabidly dances with Deftones (Mary Full of Grace), one’s swimming against the tide (Don’t believe in it), Stoner Metal and Doom indulge in mutual kiss on the hand and burping the beer gut gets stalled, at least then the last nightcaps should have been shaken up.
Three years after their excellent debut album Oceanus Porcellarum, Berlin-based Pyrior are delivering their second album Onestone. They go one step forward and totally convince me once again. Like on the first record they are throwing around with ideas that many bands don’t have in their whole career. Monotony seems to be a loanword to them. No matter how long the jams take, they always stay exciting and catchy. Riffs, trips and adorable melodies everywhere. An incredibly huge range of effects makes these guys generate sounds from other spheres. A journey straight through the galaxy and back with ups and downs, giving you the creeps, some melancholy and lots of power! Already the opener Spheres has it all (see sample). The title song is a great tribute to Fu Manchu and the first time with vocals. The other six songs are all a revelation for themselves and before I get lost in more words of praise…go and get the LP! And also don’t miss the record release-dates, you can see in our tour dates. It’s worth it, I promise!

The newcomers from Düsseldorf zap us one really hard with their 5-songs-EP. After having arranged and recorded all titles instrumentally, pat the singer, who joined up with the band more or less by accident, enhances everything with his voice, that plies between Michael Poulsen and Phil Anselmo. Hard, metal-like parts with aggressive shouts change with fuzzy groove. Always driving forward with an insanely wicked guitar sound! From sludge metal à la NOLA via doomy borrows through to good ol’ stoner – it’s all very convincing! They could make it really big!
For friends of: Down, Superjoint Ritual, Corrosion Of Conformity
“They could make it really big” I wrote after listening to their first EP Grown against the grain. And I love it when I’m right!!! Because the long desired debut from the four Düsseldorf-based dudes is just that ass-kicking record I’ve waited for the whole year!!! These heavy as fuck-riffs, this great groove and the great vocals let me jump through my room with my raised fists and the volume button already broken off at “max”! Holy cow, this is straight forward like it has to be! If Pantera had be beaten up by Kyuss in the desert, this would be the perfect soundtrack! While Scary Operator already strikes out for a punch, at least No Surprise knocks you out (the line “right between your eyes” is quite appropriate). And all this happens during the first two songs! One of the highlights is for sure Thru The Eyes Of God which increases from a slow beginning to a true neckbreaker! The quite Perfect High is the Planet Caravan of Slomind and is rather adorable than calming down. The title-track sums up everything in a great way and delights with some down-tempo, great vocals by Pat, loads of motherfuckin’ groove and riffs, riffs, riffs! This album is my recommendation to all those who like to spice up their Stoner Rock with some Metal and get fuckin’ nuts instead of hanging out stoned in the corner! Fuckin’ killer! Over and out!
There’s an intense musical activity in Austria. Bands appear, reformat or disappear again. Jakob Aigner, formerly active as frontman of Upper Austrian trio Zyonara, didn’t sit idly after he left by also forming a triple combo: Timestone. Where Zyonara lyrically and musically hit, Timestone closes the circle. Meditative waveshocks which are led by melancholy guitars and rhetorical questions about human transience and meaningfulness of life form a truly beautiful construct of Psychedelic and delicate Stoner Rock. However, the fish is still struggling and is brought back to life by excessive cymbal crashes, cowbells and bass-soundy draft at the right moment. Thanks to this manifold Timestone are going to attract much interest in the near future.
For friends of: Zyonara, My Sleeping Karma, Sungrazer
With Inside vienna based Torso deliver us a 40-minutes fireworks of psychedelic stoner rock, having its roots in the 70s. Catchy, powerful tunes and quite a trippy atmosphere run like a golden thread through the whole LP. Some cross references to new swedish bands definitely appear, but nevertheless the boys stay independent. If they had taken more time at one point or the other, there would certainly have been some nice Jams à la Iron Butterfly or The Doors. The joy of playing would definitely have allowed it! At least the album remains entertaining this way. Surely, Torso are going to be a delight at a hazy, muddled live gig!

Out of Münster’s garages a heavy stonerish Rock ‘N’ Roll Monster is about to come! Heavily influenced by scandinavian Power-Rock-Wave of the mid 90s, Wooly Antshake shake things up with their 5 testosterone-charged bundles of energy. Always with a lovely sleazy “kiss-my-ass” attitude and blue balls they let hair, drumsticks and strumming hands churn through the air. Good mood and hard party are being programmed!
For friends of: Gluecifer, Hellacopters, The Flaming Sideburns
In our team, our friends over at Noisolution are known for the finest hand selected insider tips. So xBomb Factory isn’t an exception of course. Coming from the UK, they really are convincing with their wild debut record “No”. Here, they sound like a dissonant version of Gods of Blitz – there, like an insane baby of Joy Division and Murder City Devils. Most of the time though, like Gang of Four, Albini projects and definiteley always like impelling noise. Which is a compliment of course. It gets exhausting after a while but never frustrating.
The lyrics are shouted angry in our direction and after two listens we want to return the favour to the band. Grinding, fresh Post-Punk for all those who can’t sit still.

Been Obscene und Sungrazer haben eine Reise der Gemeinsamkeiten hinter sich. Beide wurden von Stefan von Elektrohasch entdeckt und dort unter Vertrag genommen. Beide haben sich eine treue Fanbase erspielt und diese live und auf Platte nie enttäuscht. Und beide haben eine sehr unvorhersehbare und undurchsichtige Auflösung hinter sich.
Aber am aller meisten sind beide Bands über die Jahre Freunde von mir und vielen anderen geworden und diese gilt es nun gebürtig zu verabschieden. Mit diesem kleinen Special hoffen wir ein wenig Licht auf die ganze Angelegenheit der Auflösung zu werfen, alte Geschichten aufleben zu lassen und den beiden Bands noch einmal Tribut zu zollen. Sie haben es verdient. Here we go.
Been Obscene – Freunde der Nacht
Been Obscene waren gerade dabei ihr zweites Album “Night O Mine” live zu promoten, als ich die Österreicher im Oktober 2011 zum Interview in Hamburg auf der Reeperbahn (Molotow Club) traf. Als Vorband von White Hills wussten sie sich sehr glücklich zu schätzen. Ähnlich wie Sungrazer strömten die vier sofort eine Begeisterung und Energie für ihr Projekt aus. Erzählten lachend Geschichten von ihrem ersten Treffen mit Elektrohasch-Mastermind Stefan und der Entstehung ihrer Alben. Doch nicht nur den Labelchef, sondern auch mich überzeugten die häufigen Ryhtmenwechsel, die schönen Melodien und die eingängigen Songstrukturen. Eine Aura der Schönheit und Melancholie umgibt den Sound von Been Obscene. Egal, ob Demons, Endless Scheme, Alone, Uniform oder Night O Mine.
Viele der Songs hatten von Beginn an etwas persönliches für mich. So fand ich mich zum Beispiel oft spät Abends auf dem Weg von meiner WG zu meiner damaligen Freundin immer mit Endless Scheme im Ohr wieder. Der Song dauert knapp sieben Minuten. Exakt die Zeit von mir zu ihr. So spielte ich ihn immer. Auch mein Freundeskreis, der nicht in unserer Szene zu Hause ist, hat Been Obscene ins Herz geschlossen. Wenn meine Plattensammlung durchstöbert wird, bleiben sie bei Night O Mine hängen. Wenn sie im Auto genervt durch Unmengen an Stoner Rock skippen, bleiben sie bei The Magic Table Dance hängen. Ein weiterer Beweis für die perfekte Kombination aus Andersartigkeit und Eingängigkeit.
Ich blicke auf tolle Zeiten mit Been Obscene zurück. Mit der Musik und den Musikern. Been Obscene bleiben im Plattenschrank. Freunde, im Herzen. Wir sehn uns auf dem nächsten Festival!
Interview mit den Zurückgelassenen
Reden wir nicht lange drum rum. Die Hintergründe eurer Auflösung waren für die meisten Außenstehenden nicht nachvollziehbar. Was ist passiert?
Zuerst sei erwähnt, dass wir, Phil, Robert und Tommy, dazu nicht viel sagen können und wollen. Peter hat ohne jegliche Vorwarnung oder Äußerung seinerseits Ende September seinen unwiderruflichen sofortigen Ausstieg aus der Band bekanntgegeben. Seine Beweggründe waren und sind uns bis heute nicht schlüssig. Ein weiteres Treffen mit ihm um zumindest die fixierten Konzerte zu retten und damit etwas mehr Zeit für alle weiteren Entscheidungen zu bekommen, scheiterte kläglich. Nach reichlichen Überlegungen und Diskussionen war uns klar, dass wir so schnell keinen gleichwertigen Ersatz für die Konzerte finden werden und als Trio wir unseren eigenen Vorstellungen nicht gerecht würden. Somit erschien es für uns einfach am Sinnvollsten, so schwer es uns auch gefallen ist, einen klaren Schnitt zu machen und das Ende bekannt zu geben.
Ihr wart gerade dabei an einem neuen Album zu arbeiten. Gibt es davon Material? Wenn ja, was passiert damit?
Es gibt einiges an Material, zum Teil schon vorproduziert und gut anzuhören um eine Idee zu bekommen, aber noch nichts fertig aufgenommen. Weiters wurde live der eine oder andere Teil als auch komplette Song schon ausprobiert um Eindrücke des Publikums zu sammeln und die wiederrum einfließen zu lassen. Im Moment liegt alles brach und ob die Songs jemals fertiggestellt und dann Gehör finden werden, können wir im Moment nicht beantworten. (siehe Been Obscene – Unplugged, unten)
Was werdet ihr an der gemeinsamen Band-Zeit am meisten vermissen? Schaut ihr sehr wehmütig auf die Zeit zurück?
Wehmut haben wir keinen. Wir haben erst 2011 unsere erste Tour bestritten und danach begonnen regelmäßig Konzerte zu spielen. Seitdem haben wir viel gemacht, erlebt und gewagt. Nie kopflos, aber doch auch mit Risiko und vor allem zu Beginn meist auf eigene Faust. Wir haben vieles gelernt, manches falsch aber doch auch viel richtig gemacht. Vermissen werden wir bestimmt die gemeinsame Zeit auf Tour. Die unterschiedlichen Charaktere, die dort auf dich zukommen. Die Bühnen, die jedes Mal aufs Neue eine Herausforderung sind. Und vor allem die Gesichter vor der Bühne, die wir mit unserer Musik zum Strahlen bringen konnten. Wir sind wirklich stolz auf das, was wir in diesen knapp 3 Jahren auf die Beine gestellt haben.
Jahrelang bei Elektrohasch, beschreibt uns die Zeit bei der Psychedelic-Schmiede!
Stefan (Koglek) hat den ersten kleinen Traum in unserem Musikerleben Realität werden lassen. Wir konnten es anfangs gar nicht glauben. Seine Worte beim Durchhören der Mixes von The Magic Table Dance „und übrigens, ich mach es“ werden wir nie vergessen. Seitdem hat er uns unter seine Fittiche genommen und ist uns in allen Belangen immer mit Rat und Tat zur Seite gestanden. Selbst die Einladung mit uns 3 Colour Haze Songs zum Album Release Konzert von Night O’Mine zu covern hat er nicht ausgeschlagen. Ein weiterer unvergessener Moment. Generell hatten wir viel Freiraum was das Komponieren, Aufnehmen und Produzieren anging. Alles wurde sehr freundschaftlich und mit größtem Vertrauen gehandhabt, aber nie ohne den nötigen Respekt und dem Feingefühl, dass es sich hierbei auch um ein Geschäft handelt. Elektrohasch hat uns definitiv auch so manche Tür geöffnet, die ohne wohl nicht aufgegangen wäre. Stefans Unterstützung war jedenfalls Gold wert und wir können uns nur nochmals bei ihm Bedanken!
Habt ihr euch in der “Szene” wohl gefühlt, oder seid ihr froh jetzt erstmal Abstand halten zu können?
Zu Beginn war es mehr eine Art Hochschaubahn, ein Auf und Ab. Aus unserer Sicht trug da unsere Herkunft Österreich einen Teil dazu bei. Außerdem hatten und haben wir ein bisschen das Gefühl, dass unsere zum Teil doch manchmal etwas eigenwillige Musik die Leute etwas zwiespaltet. Mit Fortdauer fanden wir aber immer mehr Akzeptanz und Anerkennung bei einem immer größer werdenden Publikum. Dieser Umstand half natürlich sehr, sich wohler zu fühlen. Zuletzt gab es nur noch bestätigendes Lächeln wenn mal wieder ein „was, ihr seid aus Österreich“ kam. Wir waren angekommen und hatten unseren eigenen kleinen Bereich als Band in dieser sehr offenherzigen, treuen und tollen Szene erspielt. Daher sind wir über den Abstand nur froh, weil wir nicht ständig nach der Trennung gefragt werden, aber ansonsten haben wir sie, die Szene, schon sehr in unsere Herzen geschlossen.
Wie war euer Verhältnis zu Sungrazer und was denkt ihr über deren Auflösung? Immerhin eure Label-Brüder.
Unser Verhältnis war sehr gut. Wir haben uns immer wieder gegenseitig unterstützt, unsere Konzerte besucht und auch ein paar Mal das Glück gehabt, gemeinsam aufzutreten. Ihre Musik haben wir höchst anerkennend wahrgenommen. Ihr Erfolg hat uns und das gemeinsame Label beflügelt. Es ist sehr schade, dass sie sich aufgelöst haben. Ihre Geschichte ähnelt sich irgendwie mit unserer. Es kam überraschend und die genauen Beweggründe sind nicht wirklich nachvollziehbar.
Die wichtigste Frage zum Schluss. Klar ist die Auflösung schade, aber was kann man in Zukunft von euch erwarten? Wir hoffen alle, ihr macht weiterhin Musik!
Im Moment nimmt sich ein jeder Zeit für sich selbst, versucht Abstand zu gewinnen und sammelt Ideen für die Zukunft. Been Obscene hat maßgeblich und für immer unsere Einstellung zur Musik und den Anspruch, den wir uns selbst und unseren Mitstreitern auferlegen, verändert. Wir werden selbstverständlich weiterhin Musik machen, aber ob es noch einmal zu einem Projekt wie Been Obscene reicht, das steht in den Sternen. Wir hoffen es sehr, dass zumindest ein Teil von uns diese Chance ein weiteres Mal bekommt. Daran ist aber erst zu denken, wenn Chemie und Qualität eines eventuellen neuen Projekts stimmen. Been Obscene – Unplugged
Dass Been Obscene noch nicht ganz los lassen können bzw. wollen hat schon das Abschiedskonzert im Dezember eindrucksvoll bewiesen. Jetzt gehen sie noch einen Schritt weiter und geben ihren Fans noch etwas ganz besonderes mit auf den Weg. Eben dieses letzte Konzert wird als Doppel LP veröffentlicht. Dazu gibt es verschiedene Bestellmöglichkeiten, die ihr hier finden könnt. Unter anderem dabei ist ein 40 minütiger HD Livemitschnitt zum herunterladen.
Mein erstes Mal Sungrazer werde ich nie vergessen. Juni 2010. Ich fuhr mit dem Auto nach Tübingen ins Epple Haus. Auto ins Parkhaus und rein da zu Asteroid und, den mir noch unbekannten, Sungrazer. Damals schrieb ich: “Spätestens bei If (das stark an einen Colour Haze Song erinnert) sind wir überzeugt, dass der Elektrohasch-Neuling echt was drauf hat.” Hinterher erzählen mir Rutger, Sander und Hans aufgeregt von ihrem Deal mit Elektrohasch und ihrer ersten Platte. Sie lassen mich wissen, dass es heute ihr erster Deutschland-Gig war. Ich dagegen weiß sofort, es war nicht ihr letzter.
Nach den (ebenfalls tollen) Asteroid merke ich, dass meine Karre im Autohaus über Nacht eingeschlossen wurde. Ich hatte letztendlich dann nicht nur das Vergnügen mit (heftig berauschten) Asteroid und Sungrazer in einem Matratzenlager unter dem Dach zu übernachten, sondern auch einen abgefahrenen Jam von Sungrazer, Asteroid und Captain Duff Leuten nachts um drei mit erleben zu dürfen. Was eine Nacht.
Und so wie ich die Niederländer damals kennen gelernt habe, sollte ich sie noch öfters erleben dürfen. Witzig, gut drauf, sympatisch und mit einer Menge Bock zu spielen. Achja, erwähnen sollte man noch, dass Sungrazer sich innerhalb kürzester Zeit von der kleinen Vorband Asteroids zu einer der beliebtesten Live-Formatierungen der jüngeren Generation der Szene entwickelt haben. Mit Common Believer schenkten Sungrazer denen gleich noch die passende Hymne.
Was mir vor allem in Erinnerung bleiben wird, sind nicht nur die Live-Auftritte, die zwei Platten Sungrazer und Mirador oder die Split mit ihren guten Freunden von The Machine, sondern die drei Spinner hinter und vor der Bühne. In einem Arm das Bier im anderen, mich. Good times. Leute, danke für die guten Zeiten. Ich freu mich auf unser nächstes Zusammentreffen und eure kommenden Projekte.
Interview with Sander
Let’s cut right to the chase: The disbandment of Sungrazer really happend for the fans out of nowhere. Could you tell us why Rutger left and especially why you didn’t decide to get another guitar player?
Before I will get to the cutting and the chasing, I have to say that it is still strange for me to hear that we had fans. Maybe the word ‘fans’ is just a bit weird to me. Makes me think of people going totally nuts and worshipping just some dudes. But I want to say I still feel honoured and thankful that some people liked what we did.
So we quit the band. There were some problems we couldn’t solve and it was only a matter of time before we would have to stop. So when Rutger pulled the plug it didn’t came as a surprise for Hans and me. Although it happened earlier than we expected, right before our show on Duna Jam.
Hans and I knew immediately we weren’t going on with the band and search for other members. I think this had more reasons. First of all no one was replaceable in this band. It’s not about playing some notes on a guitar. It’s about a person who puts his heart and soul in it. Without Rutger, or anyone else, it wouldn’t be Sungrazer. That’s how we always saw it. Also we had these problems for a while and we became pretty tired of it. So it was a relief I think for all of us when we broke up the band. And it felt like a good time to let new inspiration flow and make new stuff.
Common Believer really is some kind of “hit”. Why do you think that is. And did sometimes people always scream for it and you didn’t want to play it, like The Doors hated to play Light My Fire?
Haha. Well I always enjoyed playing that song. It’s a great song! We did some serious stoner bashing time together with the crowds on that one! Guess it has the right beat and the perfect riff for it. And I got the chance to do some serious trashing in that song, which I liked. Of course we never tried to write a hit or anything. It was just a song we wrote like any other song. But some how it became sort of an anthem for us. These things can happen. So even though it might be our “Light My fire” or “Smells Like Teen Spirit” or “Tempel” or whatever you want to call it, we always played it and I always enjoyed it.
What will you miss the most regarding the times with the band? Do yoo look back with melancholy?
I don’t know. I miss the good times we had. For Sure. But I wouldn’t want to get back together or go on with the band. It was fun. Next question?!
You were quite some time on the amazing Elektrohasch-Label. Could you describe the time there and with Stefan?
You make it sound like we were all living in a big Elektrohash cabin somewhere in the Bavarian forest. Haha! Smoking pipe. Chopping wood. Does that sound strange to you? Well, sometimes it felt like that. We had the feeling we were part of a family. And we were so happy when we could release our first record on the label! Amazing times. We were all Colour Haze fans, you know. And not the totally nuts going and worshipping kind of fans. But more like the guys who went to a Colour Haze show for the first time and walked into the venue during their soundcheck through the backdoor by accident and just stood there watching the back of their amps while they were soundchecking and we could only smile to each other… that kind of fans. So yeah it was amazing to be a part of it.
Did you feel comfortable within the “scene” or are you happy to finally get some distance to it?
Yes I felt comfortable with the scene we were in. Most of these people are really dedicated to the bands and the music. They are really listening to what you are doing. And they are also really high.
How was your relationship with Been Obscene and what do you think about their break-up? You are label-brothers after all.
What can I say? Bummer dude…
The most important questions at the end. Of course it’s a shame Sungrazer is no more, but we are looking forward to other projects by you guys. What can we expect?

Been Obscene and Sungrazer have a journey of similarities behind them. Both were discovered by Stefan of Elektrohasch and taken there under contract. Both have earned a loyal fan base and never disappointed them live or on record. Also both split up in a very unpredictable and incomprehensible way.
But most of all, over the years, both bands have become friends of mine and many others. And now we have so say goodbye in a proper way. With this little special, we hope to throw some light on the whole matter of the split, to retell old stories and to pay tribute to the two bands once more. You deserve it. Here we go.

Many of the songs were from the beginning something personal for me. So for example I found myself often late at night on the way from my shared flat to my then-girlfriend always with Endless Scheme on the iPod. The song lasts almost seven minutes. Exactly the time from my place to hers. So I played it every time. Even my friends, who are not home in our scene, have fallen in love with Been Obscene. If they go through my record collection they get stuck at Night O Mine. If they skip annoyed through endless amount of Stoner Rock in my car, they get stuck at The Magic Table Dance. Another proof of the perfect combination of originality and catchiness.
I look back at great times with Been Obscene. With the music and the musicians. Been Obscene remain on the record shelves. Friends, in the heart. We’ll see you at the next festival!
Interview with the abandoned
Let’s cut right to the chase. The fans did not quite get why you guys split up. What happend?
First of all we, Phil, Robert and Tommy, want to mention that we can’t and don’t want to say much about it. By the end of September Peter has announced his irrevocable immediate withdrawal from the band without any warning or sharing some thoughts beforehand. Still to this day his reasons aren’t conclusive for us. Another meeting to at least save the already booked shows and thereby gain more time for the additional decisions failed miserably. After plenty of thoughts and discussions it was clear for us, that we won’t find an equal substitute on such short notice nor we would satisfy our expectations as a trio. Consequently making a clean cut and announce the end of the band, made the most sense to us, as painful as it was.
You just were in the middle of making a third record. Is there material available? If so, what will happen with it?
There is some material, parts of it pre-produced to get a better idea, but nothing completely recorded. Furthermore some of that material was already played live to collect the audience’s reaction and slip that into the songs again. At the moment everything lies idle and if it is ever going to be completed and then be heard, we can’t answer right now. (see Been Obscene Unplugged below)
What will you miss the most when you think about the times with the band. Are you looking back in melancholy?
We don’t look back in melancholy. In 2011 we first played our initial tour and then started gigging on a regular base. Since then we have experienced, risked and done a lot. Never headless but always with a good portion of venture and at the beginning mostly on our own. We learned a lot, did some things wrong but also many quite right. We will definitely miss the time being together on tour. The different characters which approach you. The stages that are a new challenge every time you hit them. And most of all the faces in front of the stage, which we were able to make them smile with our music. We are really proud of what we have accomplished in the past 3 years.
You were on the label Elektrohasch, tell us about your time there!
Stefan (Koglek) let our first small musician’s dream become reality. At first we couldn’t believe it. We will never forget his words “and by the way, I do it” when we listened to the final mixes of The Magic Table Dance. Since then he took us under his wings and stood by our side with help and advice. He even agreed to cover 3 Colour Haze songs for the Night O’Mine album release. Another unforgotten moment. In general we had a lot of freedom regarding composing, recording and producing. Everything was handled very friendly and with huge faith, but never without showing the needed respect and sensitivity that this is also a business relationship. Elektrohasch has definitely opened some doors for us, which we would have never gotten to without. Stefan’s support was worth a mint and we can only thank him again big times!
Did you feel comfortable withing the “stoner rock scene” or are you happy to have some distance now?
At first it was more rollercoaster like, an up and down. From our point of view being from Austria was a part of it. On top of this we had and have the feeling that our, in some parts a bit arbitrary, music gets the audience into a conflict. But with persistence we found more acceptance and recognition from a constant growing crowd. Of course that helped a lot to feel much better. At last there were only confirming laughs we when heard another “what, you guys come from Austria”. We have reached the point where we got our own little place in this very openhearted, faithful and awesome scene. Therefore we are only happy about the distance because we aren’t constantly confronted with the band split, otherwise we definitely have her, the scene”, locked in our hearts.
How was your relationship towards Sungrazer and what do you think about them splitting up? You were label brothers after all
Our relationship was very good. We have supported each other on and off throughout the years, went to each others shows and were also lucky enough to share the stage a couple of times. We have highly appreciated their music. Their success has inspired the common label and us. It is very unfortunate that they split as well. We can even see some similarities. It was very surprisingly and the exact reasons aren’t really understandable.
The most important question at last. Of course the split up is very sad, but what can we expect in the future from you guys? We alle hope you keep on making music!
At the moment we are taking some time off for ourselves, try to gain distance from what happened and collect ideas for the future. Been Obscene has significant and forever changed our musical mindset and the demand, we put on our and the shoulders of our colleagues. We definitely keep on going to make music, but if it will be enough for another project like Been Obscene, that’s written in the stars. We really hope that at least some of us will get a second chance. But first chemistry and quality have to be right to consider a new project. Been Obscene – Unplugged
That Been Obscene still can not quite let go (or want to), they already impressively demonstrated at their farewell concert in December. Now they go one step further and give their fans something very special on the way. It is this last concert which will be released as a double live LP. There are several ordering options, which you can find right here. Among other things, a 40 minute HD live recording will be there for you to download.
My first time Sungrazer I will never forget. June 2010. I drove to the Epplehaus in Tübingen by car. I put it into the parking garage and got in there to see Asteroid and the, to me yet unknown, Sungrazer. At the time I wrote: “At the latest after seeing them play If (which is strongly reminiscent of a Colour Haze Song), I am convinced that the Elektrohasch newbie really is here to stay.” Afterwards Rutger, Sander and Hans tell me excited about their deal with Elektrohasch and their first record. They let me know that it was their first gig in Germany today. I by then already immediately know it was not going to be their last one either.
After the (also great) Asteroid gig, I realize that my car was trapped in the car parking house overnight. I eventually had to stay at the venue and not only had the pleasure with (violently intoxicated) sleep with Asteroid and Sungrazer in a dormitory under the roof, but also get to see a funky jam of members of Sungrazer, Asteroid and Captain Duff at three o clock in the night. What a blast we had.
And just as I got to know the Dutch at that time, I should be able to experience them a lot more times. Funny, in a good mood, friendly and always eager to play on stage. Oh, I also should mention Sungrazer went from being Asteroids little support act to one of the most popular live bands of the younger generation of the scenes fans within a very short peroid of time. With Common Believer Sungrazer also gave them a never to be forgotten anthem.
What will remain in my memory in particular, are not only the live performances, the two records Sungrazer and Mirador or the split with their good friends of The Machine, but the three dudes behind and in front of the stage. In one arm the beer in the other – me. Guys, thanks for the good times. I’m looking forward to our next encounter and your upcoming projects.
Interview with Sander
Let’s cut right to the chase: The disbandment of Sungrazer really happend for the fans out of nowhere. Could you tell us why Rutger left and especially why you didn’t decide to get another guitar player?
Before I will get to the cutting and the chasing, I have to say that it is still strange for me to hear that we had fans. Maybe the word ‘fans’ is just a bit weird to me. Makes me think of people going totally nuts and worshipping just some dudes. But I want to say I still feel honoured and thankful that some people liked what we did.
So we quit the band. There were some problems we couldn’t solve and it was only a matter of time before we would have to stop. So when Rutger pulled the plug it didn’t came as a surprise for Hans and me. Although it happened earlier than we expected, right before our show on Duna Jam.
Hans and I knew immediately we weren’t going on with the band and search for other members. I think this had more reasons. First of all no one was replaceable in this band. It’s not about playing some notes on a guitar. It’s about a person who puts his heart and soul in it. Without Rutger, or anyone else, it wouldn’t be Sungrazer. That’s how we always saw it. Also we had these problems for a while and we became pretty tired of it. So it was a relief I think for all of us when we broke up the band. And it felt like a good time to let new inspiration flow and make new stuff.
Common Believer really is some kind of “hit”. Why do you think that is. And did sometimes people always scream for it and you didn’t want to play it, like The Doors hated to play Light My Fire?
Haha. Well I always enjoyed playing that song. It’s a great song! We did some serious stoner bashing time together with the crowds on that one! Guess it has the right beat and the perfect riff for it. And I got the chance to do some serious trashing in that song, which I liked. Of course we never tried to write a hit or anything. It was just a song we wrote like any other song. But some how it became sort of an anthem for us. These things can happen. So even though it might be our “Light My fire” or “Smells Like Teen Spirit” or “Tempel” or whatever you want to call it, we always played it and I always enjoyed it.
What will you miss the most regarding the times with the band? Do yoo look back with melancholy?
I don’t know. I miss the good times we had. For Sure. But I wouldn’t want to get back together or go on with the band. It was fun. Next question?!
You were quite some time on the amazing Elektrohasch-Label. Could you describe the time there and with Stefan?
You make it sound like we were all living in a big Elektrohash cabin somewhere in the Bavarian forest. Haha! Smoking pipe. Chopping wood. Does that sound strange to you? Well, sometimes it felt like that. We had the feeling we were part of a family. And we were so happy when we could release our first record on the label! Amazing times. We were all Colour Haze fans, you know. And not the totally nuts going and worshipping kind of fans. But more like the guys who went to a Colour Haze show for the first time and walked into the venue during their soundcheck through the backdoor by accident and just stood there watching the back of their amps while they were soundchecking and we could only smile to each other… that kind of fans. So yeah it was amazing to be a part of it.
Did you feel comfortable within the “scene” or are you happy to finally get some distance to it?
Yes I felt comfortable with the scene we were in. Most of these people are really dedicated to the bands and the music. They are really listening to what you are doing. And they are also really high.
How was your relationship with Been Obscene and what do you think about their break-up? You are label-brothers after all.
What can I say? Bummer dude…
The most important questions at the end. Of course it’s a shame Sungrazer is no more, but we are looking forward to other projects by you guys. What can we expect?

Been Obscene waren gerade dabei ihr zweites Album “Night O Mine” live zu promoten, als ich die Österreicher im Oktober 2011 zum Interview in Hamburg auf der Reeperbahn (Molotow Club) traf. Als Vorband von White Hills wussten sie sich sehr glücklich zu schätzen. Ähnlich wie Sungrazer strömten die vier sofort eine Begeisterung und Energie für ihr Projekt aus. Erzählten lachend Geschichten von ihrem ersten Treffen mit Elektrohasch-Mastermind Stefan und der Entstehung ihrer Alben. Doch nicht nur den Labelchef, sondern auch mich überzeugten die häufigen Ryhtmenwechsel, die schönen Melodien und die eingängigen Songstrukturen. Eine Aura der Schönheit und Melancholie umgibt den Sound von Been Obscene. Egal, ob Demons, Endless Scheme, Alone, Uniform oder Night O Mine.
Die wichtigste Frage zum Schluss. Klar ist die Auflösung schade, aber was kann man in Zukunft von euch erwarten? Wir hoffen alle, ihr macht weiterhin Musik!
