Hierbei handelt es sich um eine Split-LP, zusammengesetzt aus drei Bands. Veröffentlicht wird die LP in drei verschiedenen Designs. Und zwar gibt es jeweils eins in Europa, Amerika oder Australien zu erwerben. Gibt Sinn; kommen die drei Bands schließlich aus eben diesen Teilen der Welt. Drei – Das scheint hier sowieso die magische Zahl zu sein. Das Vinyl ist laut Angaben des Labels BroFidelity Records dreifarbig gepresst (“1/3 blood red, 1/3 piss yellow, 1/3 sea blue”).
Doch nicht nur die Verpackung setzt sich aus außergewöhnlichen Kombinationen zusammen, sondern eben auch der Inhalt. Waterways nehmen mit vier Tracks die ganze erste Seite ein. Sagt euch nichts? Es handelt sich wieder mal um eine Bandformation direkt aus der Wüste. Gary Arce (Yawning Man, Ten East), Abby Travis (Masters of Reality, Eagles of Death Metal), Mario Lalli (Fatso Jetson, Yawning Man) und Tony Tornay (Fatso Jetson, Dark Robot) sind alles Namen, die einem geläufig sein sollten. So hat Mario Lalli zum Beispiel mit der legendären Band Across The River auf Abby Travis’ Geburtstagsfeier gespielt. Das ist natürlich schon ewig her. Umso beeindruckender, dass sich die Freundschaft bis heute gehalten hat und jetzt dieses Bandprojekt gestartet wurde.
Die Grundstimmung wird markant durch Arce und Lalli gelegt, die mit Bass und Gitarre ein Ambiente á la Yawning Man kreieren. Was Waterways dann aber zu dem macht, was es ist, sind die Lyrics und Vocals von Abby Travis. Der Gesang und die eher begleitenden, als führenden, Drumbeats verleihen den Songs einen Folktouch, der diese zwischen träumerischen Visionen und Wüstenlegenden pendeln lässt.
Songs einzeln heraus zu heben ist nicht nötig, alle sind schön, hypnotisch und zerbrechlich. Ein weiteres tolles Desert-Projekt, ganz im Sinne von Yawning Man, Ten East und den Desert Sessions. Schade, dass gerade solche Zusammenarbeiten kaum an die breite Masse gelangen.
Wo sich die Waterways Songs noch etwas geähnelt haben, wird man nach dem Umdrehen der LP, von einem ganz anderen Sound überrascht. Sons of Alpha Centauri zelebrieren einen fetten Ambient-Post-Rock-Song, der anderen Szenengrößen in nichts nachsteht. So baut sich der rein instrumentale Track immer wieder auf und gewinnt durchgehend an Spannung. Der Song 27 sollte ursprünglich im Debütalbum der Engländer Platz finden, war aber dann zu lang. Jetzt erhalten wir also über die Split einen remasterten Achtminüter, der durch Höhen und Tiefen, laut und leise und vorallem ein fesselndes Ambiente besticht.
Auch Hotel Wrecking City Traders setzen auf Spannung und Ambiente. Doch die Songstruktur kristalisiert sich eher langsam, über Minuten, heraus und wummst nicht gleich so klar los, wie Sons of Alpha Centauris 27. So will Pulmo Victus nie wirklich explodieren, obwohl ständig noch eine weitere Soundebene herausgekitzelt wird. Wobei: Falsch. Als Grundlage für den Track wurde nämlich nur ein einzelner, live aufgenommener Gitarrentrack benutzt. Um diesen herum entsteht eine Welt aus Noise, Hypnose, Vernichtung, Melodie und Lärm. Irgendwie simpel und gleichzeitig unglaublich vielschichtig. Ein Song der Aufmerksamkeit verlangt.
Die Kombination macht Spaß und garantiert durch das Motto “Three continents, three bands, one vision” ein nicht langweilig werdendes Hörerlebnis. Alle drei Bands setzen auf ambiente Soundlandschaften und spielen trotz ihrer unterschiedlichen Herkunft alle letztendlich das selbe: Ehrliche Musik.

This is a split LP including three bands. The LP will be released in three different designs. There is one each in Europe, America or Australia to acquire. Makes sense, because the three bands eventually come from those certain parts of the world. Three – That seems to be the magic number anyway. The vinyl is, according to the label BroFidelity Records pressed in Tricolor (“1/3 blood red, 1/3 piss yellow, 1/3 sea blue”).
But not only the packaging is made up of exceptional combinations, but also the content. Waterways fill the whole first side with four tracks. Don’t know them? It is another band formation from the desert. Gary Arce (Yawning Man, Ten East), Abby Travis (Masters of Reality, Eagles of Death Metal), Mario Lalli (Fatso Jetson, Yawning Man) and Tony Tornay (Fatso Jetson, Dark Robot) are all names that you shouldn’t read for the first time. Mario Lalli, for example, played with the legendary band Across The River at Abby Travis’ birthday party. This was of course a long time ago. Very impressive that the friendship has survived to this day and now this band was founded.
The mood is set by Arce and Lalli prominently. The bass and guitar sound create an atmosphere à la Yawning Man. But what Waterways really constitutes are the lyrics and vocals by Abby Travis. The singing, and rather accompanying than leading drumbeats apply a folk touch to the songs that makes them commute between dreamy visions and desert legends.
To stand out songs individually is not necessary, all are beautiful, hypnotic and fragile. Another great desert project, in the spirit of Yawning Man, Ten East and the Desert Sessions. Pity that such collaborations hardly reach the masses.
While the Waterways songs were quite similar, you will be surprised after turning the LP, because you get to hear a completely different sound. Sons of Alpha Centauri celebrate a rich ambient Post-Rock song, that reaches a quality equal to big scene heroes like Pelican. Therefore the instrumental track builds up again and again and wins energy consistently. The song 27 was originally intended to be heard on the debut album of the British band, but actually was too long. Now we obtain the remastered 8-minute-track on this Split, that captivates through ups and downs, loud and quite, and especially a fascinating ambiance.
Hotel Wrecking City Traders also rely on tension and atmosphere. But the song structure crystallizes rather slowly, over minutes, and does not slam as clear as Sons of Alpha Centauris 27 right into it. Pulmo Victus never really wants to explode, although always another sound level is added. Well actually: Wrong. As of for the basis of the track there was used only a single, live recorded guitar track. Around it there is getting a world of noise, hypnosis, destruction, melody and noise created. Somehow simultaneously simple and incredibly complex. A song which demands attention.
The combination is fun and guaranteed by the motto “Three continents, three bands, one vision” you won’t get a boring nascent listening experience. All three bands value ambient soundscapes and ultimately play, despite their different backgrounds, the same: honest music.
